There are two methods of computing equipment usage time.
Hobbs meter time is the most popular. Hobbs meter time tracks time from engine start up till engine shut down at the same rate as a normal clock. Example: Start the engine at at 10:00 AM , Shut down at 11:00 AM you will be charged for 1 hour of flight time.
Tachometer time tracts engine time based on engine speed. At idle or reduced power settings the tachometer is running slower and the tachometer runs slower. Typically when the engine is running at 2300 RPM the tachometer runs at 1 hour equals 1 hour.
The benefit is during ground run/ taxiing / slow flight / reduced power settings you may be able to fly longer longer with the tachometer time than Hobbs meter time.
Typically we see a 15-20% savings in hourly equipment charges over Hobbs Meter time.
This saves you money.
